Retired at 40. Now What the Heck Do I Do?

Today is the first day of the next chapter of my life!  I am officially no longer employed. The last 5 years have been a ridiculous roller coaster: IPO planning, IPO cancelation, Mass Layoffs, IPO cancelation #2 and #3, Record reveneues, IPO celebration, First M&A deal, Brazil business start up, Brazil business shutdown, and finally my exit.

Current list: Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Cyprus, Turkey, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Denmark, Croatia, Spain, Germany, Italy, Israel, Kenya, Tanzania, India

If You're Lazy, Everything You Know About Budgeting is A*s Backwards

Budgeting...argghh...I know, especially when you're young and the world of possibility seems endless and timeless, the idea of budgeting feels like jamming a 2x4 up your butt sideways. However, if you Learn to Budget Backwards you can increase your chances of maintaining a successful budget.

How to Screw Up Spanish and Portuguese in the Worse Way

Cultural Snafu #24- Spanish and Portuguese have many similarities. I am guessing maybe a 40% overlap. Sometimes the words are close and sometimes completely different. Example Thank You in Portuguese is Obrigado (vs Gracias), but You're Welcome is both De Nada.  Sometimes, when you make assumptions, especially with languages, you make an ASS out of (just) yourself.

Brazilian Cuss words are AWESOME and don't always have a direct English traslation

Brazilian champ (Jose Aldo) on the left is one of my favorite MMA fighters. The guy on the right (Connor McGregor) swiped his belt during a press conference. The translator on TV thought Aldo was calling him an a**hole and and son of b&tch...NOPE! Jose Aldo Brazilian Cuss Words

Aldo was pretty pissed and kept repeating "Você é um otário. Zé buceta. Vai tomar no meio do seu cu. Filho da puta. Arrombado"

"Otário" means loser and sucker.  This is the only family friendly thing Aldo said. The rest are things you just don't hear from a Brazilian that is at least a little bit happy to see you.

  • "Vai tomar no meio do seu cu" = Go f*&k yourself right in the middle of your as*hole. The explicit location given makes me giggle.

The eloquence, color, and beauty of the Latin based language is broken down further.

Is Retiring in Vietnam Worth The Money?

You can retire in many places for significantly less than what it would cost in the US.

As an example, the average wage of a professional white collar worker in Vietnam is ~$450 per month.

Banking: 7.6 million VND/month

Pharmacy: 7 million VND/month

Food Industry: 2.3 million VND/month

Western English Teacher: $1000-$3000 (varies a considerable degree, depending on who you ask)

Bai but Resort Da Nang Vietnam

The natural follow up question to "What does it cost to retire in Vietnam/Thailand/Philippines?", is "What kind of lifestyle can I expect to live?"

Last Monday, our Head of Finance was caught in an "Arrastao". No good English translation, but basically, armed gunmen block a major road with stolen cars or debris. They then rob everyone stuck in the resulting traffic jam. He abandoned his car and sprinted to a nearby mall to escape. This happened just a block from the office...and I live in the "good" part of town. What about the cops you ask. Well there was a cop in the traffic jam. He decided to strip off his uniform and jump off a bridge into a stream to escape. This is getting crazy. The stats below were for January in our neighborhood.

b2ap3_thumbnail_frabz-The-fail-is-strong-in-this-one-7c97cd.jpgI have done everything by the book.  I connected all the dots.  I was a Dean's List student at a competitive Top 10 Business School (Indiana University).  I graduated with 4 Majors (Information Systems, Accounting, International Business, and Operations Management) and a Minor (Speech Communication).
